Like the title suggest, Born is seen as Frank’s “origin series” within the MAX series. Garth Ennis is seen as the writer who really tied Frank to the Vietnam war during his main MAX series and this is the four issue miniseries that explores Frank’s actions during the final days of his last combat tour at Firebase Valley Forge.

This series is more divisive than most at telling how Frank becomes the Punisher as it posits a disembodied voice that talks to Frank at the end of each issue promising an endless war.

Personally I posit this as a form of dissociative identity disorder brought about by post-traumatic stress disorder where the identity of Frank Castle is separate to the identity of The Punisher.

But that’s just me.

The series serves as a prelude to Garth Ennis’ main MAX series, but neither are essential reading to inform the other and there is no strict reading order.
